The Simplicity & Power of 4x4

On a 4x4 grid (16 cells), every move has a pronounced impact. This simplicity is its strength, allowing players to directly observe cause-and-effect relationships between their placements and the remaining empty spaces. It's a foundational lesson in spatial logic, emphasizing precise shape formation and the 'one clue per shape' rule without overwhelming complexity. This grid trains your eye for basic tiling principles.

4x4 Patches FAQ

Beginner Walkthrough: Your First 4x4 Solve

Step 1: Scan the Corners. Look for a clue in any of the four corners. Let's say there is a '2' in the top-left corner. It can only be a 1x2 rectangle going right or a 2x1 rectangle going down. Look at the clue to its right. If that clue is also a '2', it forces your hand: the corner '2' must go downwards, because placing it horizontally would block the other clue entirely.

Step 2: Solve the Most Constrained Clues. After the corners, look for clues with shape icons (like a Square) or small numbers. A '1' is the easiest—it's already a solved 1x1 shape! A '4-Square' must be a 2x2 block, which is a huge chunk of a 4x4 grid. Placing these definitive shapes will severely limit the options for the remaining clues.

Step 3: Fill the Gaps. Once you have a few shapes placed, you'll start to see empty cells that can only be reached by one remaining clue. These are called 'forced moves'. Systematically filling these forced moves is the safest way to solve the rest of the puzzle without needing to guess. Remember, every cell must be covered!
