How to Play Patches Game
Master the logic, use the tools, and conquer grids of all sizes. Here is your definitive guide to becoming a Patches architect.
The 5 Rules of Patches
1. Read the Clues
Observe the clues. The number indicates how many cells the shape must contain. An icon means a specific shape constraint.
2. Drag to Draw
Click and drag from a clue cell to draw a rectangle covering adjacent empty cells.
3. One Clue Per Shape
Each drawn shape must contain exactly one clue. You cannot merge two clues or leave a shape cluelss.
4. Cover All Cells
Leave no cell behind! The puzzle is only solved when every single cell belongs to a valid shape.
5. Remove or Update
Made a mistake? Tap an existing shape to remove it, or simply draw over it to update your placement.
See it in Action
Watch how a 4x4 grid is systematically filled. Each shape encompasses exactly one clue, perfectly matching its size and icon constraints until the entire board is covered.
The Shape Constraints
Some clues come with icons. These enforce the exact proportions of your rectangle.
Square
Perfect square (e.g., 2x2, 3x3).
Tall
Height greater than width (e.g., 1x3, 2x4).
Wide
Width greater than height (e.g., 3x1, 4x2).
Tall or Wide
Non-square rectangle (tall or wide).
In-Game Tools & Controls
Use these utilities to navigate levels and streamline your solving experience.
Undo
Reverts your last action. Perfect for backing out of a logical dead-end.
Reset
Clears the entire board. Use this when you are completely stuck and need a fresh perspective.
Grid Size Selector
In infinite mode, choose your preferred grid size or select 'Random' for varied challenges.
Level Selection
In level mode, select both the grid size and the specific level number to play.
Pro Strategy Tips
1. Seek Forced Moves
Look for cells that can only possibly be reached by a single clue due to distance constraints. These are your anchors.
2. Start Restrictive
Tackle clues with icons (Square, Tall, Wide) first. They have fewer valid configurations than unconstrained numbers.
3. Work the Edges
Corners and edges limit how shapes can grow. Use board boundaries to eliminate possibilities quickly.
4. Check Connectivity
Never place a shape that isolates empty cells from all remaining clues. Every cell must be reachable.
