8x8 Logic

The Algorithmic Beauty of 8x8

An 8x8 grid (64 cells) represents a near-perfect balance between expansive possibilities and solvable complexity. It’s large enough to hide intricate logical traps but structured enough for a patient solver to unravel. This size highlights the algorithmic nature of Patches; each correct placement systematically reduces the 'entropy' of the board, leading inevitably to the solution. It is a profound exercise in computational thinking and pattern recognition on a grand scale.

Expert Techniques for the 8x8 Grid

Advanced Connectivity: On large grids, it's not enough to just check if cells are isolated. You have to consider the shape of the remaining area. For example, if you have a '6-Wide' clue (3x2) left, but the only remaining empty space is a 2x3 area, that is a valid move. But if the empty space is a 1x6 area, your '6-Wide' clue cannot fit. You must ensure the remaining space can accommodate the shapes of the remaining clues.

Working Backwards: Sometimes the best way to solve a clue is to solve the cells around it first. If you have a large '12' clue in the middle of the board, it has dozens of possible placements. Leave it alone! Instead, solve the smaller, more constrained clues around the periphery. By boxing it in, you will dramatically reduce the number of valid placements for the '12' clue, often leaving only one possible solution.

Deduction by Contradiction: This is the pinnacle of logical solving. Assume one placement for a clue is correct. Follow the logical chain of moves it forces. If at any point this chain leads to a contradiction (e.g., a clue has no legal moves left), then your initial assumption must be false. This allows you to eliminate that possibility with 100% certainty and is the key to cracking the most difficult levels.
